The Art of Money

Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art … making money
is art and working is art and good business is the best art.

~ ANDY WARHOL

Throughout this website are reproductions of an almost lost and forgotten art form: intaglio engraving.  These engravings are digitally scanned details from various denominations of U.S. currency.  Engravers with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Treasury since 1862, use their refined artistic skill and hard metal tools to “draw” an image by cutting microscopic lines, dots and dashes of varying depths onto a soft metal plate called a master die.  A portrait like that of Ben Franklin can take 500 hours to engrave.  The image on the master die is then moved to a transfer roll, and intaglio plates are made from the transfer roll for printing.  More than 140 years later the craft is still carried out in this painstaking way, resulting in the richly detailed paper currency that we take for granted.

This appreciation of craftsmanship and attention to detail is the cornerstone of our work
at  Moon Capital Management.
